How am I conversationally anal-retentive?
I finally worked up the inspiration to make my top ten TV shows spam last week, and now I have worked up the motivation to post it here with my thinky thoughts. So, here it is. There may be slight spoilers, but nothing really big, and almost all of them are shows that are off the air.

My Top Ten Television Shows Ever

10. Friends

Monica
: And Dad, you know that mailman you got fired? He didn’t steal your Playboys. Ross did!
Ross: Yeah, well hurricane Gloria didn’t break the porch swing. Monica did!
Monica: Ross hasn’t worked at the museum for a year!
Ross: Monica and Chandler are living together!
Monica: Ross married Rachel in Vegas and got divorced… again!
Phoebe: I love Jacques Cousteau!
Rachel: I wasn’t supposed to put beef in the trifle!
Joey: I wanna go!
Mrs. Geller: That’s a lot of information to get in 30 seconds
.

Friends was my first TV obsession. It was my first DVD collection. I used to go over to my best friend's house to watch it when we didn't have TV, and I watched the same episode over and over again when my sister would bring home a copy taped on VHS. It's one of my most referenced shows in real life, and it never fails to make me laugh.

09. Skins

Tony: I say this world extends way beyond this little field of dreams we’re dancing in, and I want to see that world.
Chris: What the fuck’s he on about?
Jal: He’s quoting Chris, it’s a literary reference.
Chris
: What, you mean like Shakespeare or shit?
Jal: Dawson’s Creek.

Skins is a fairly new love for me. I love it for it's melodramatics, and I love it for the way that even with all the over the top scenarios and drama, the characters still feel like real people. For me, the realism isn't in the situations or the drugs and nudity, it's in the emotions and reactions of the characters. I like that they use young, inexperienced actors and give young, inexperienced writers a chance, too. It's a flawed show, but it's given me characters to adore and things to laugh and cry about, and I can't help but obsess over it and love it with each new generation of characters and actors and dramatics.

08. Doctor Who

Martha: Don’t you wanna know what I was doing, traveling the world?
The Master: Tell me.
Martha: I told a story, that’s all. No weapons, just words. I did just what the Doctor said. I went across the continents, all on my own. And everywhere I went I found the people and I told them my story. I told them about the Doctor. And I told them to pass it, to spread the word so that everyone would know about the Doctor.
The Master: Faith and hope. Is that all?
Martha: No. ‘Cause I gave them an instruction. Just as the Doctor said. I told them that if everyone thinks of one word, at one specific time—
The Master: Nothing will happen. Is that your weapon? Prayer?
Martha: —right across the world. One word, just one thought, at one moment, but with fifteen satellites.
The Master: What?
Jack: The Archangel Network.
Martha: The telepathic field, binding the whole human race together. With all of them, every single person on Earth, thinking the same thing at the same time. And that word is “Doctor.”

Doctor Who is a brand new baby love, but it's a strong one. I watched the entire reboot on Netflix in something like a week and a half. And then I decided that my mom needed to see it, so I got it from the library and immediately started watching all over again. I love all of the versions of the doctor (though the ninth is my favorite, and I miss him) and all of the companions are amazing and strong characters. I think someday it might move up on this list, but I've only loved it for a month or so, and I just couldn't justify it being any higher.

07. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy: This is how many apocalypses for us now?
Giles: Oh, uh, well, six at least. Feels like a hundred.
Buffy: I’ve always stopped them. Always won.
Giles: Yes.
Buffy: I sacrificed Angel to save the world. I loved him so much. But I knew, what was right. I don’t have that anymore. I don’t understand. I don’t know how to live in this world, if these are the choices. If everything just gets stripped away. I don’t see the point. I just wish that- I just wish my mom was here. — The spirit guide told me, that death is my gift. I guess that means a Slayer really is just a killer after all.
Giles: I think you’re wrong about that.
Buffy: It doesn’t matter. If Dawn dies, I’m done with it. I’m quitting.

So, I almost put Doctor Who ahead of Buffy. I even had this graphic saved as 08 in the file name. But then I was looking for a quote to use, and I read this one, and I cried. And I was like, self, what are you doing? So, Buffy held it's place at seven against tough competition. Regardless, this show is so fantastic. I love it from beginning to end, and I think the portrayal of Buffy's depression in S6 is one of the most honest portrayal's of the illness I've ever seen. It was a dark season, but so powerful. In general, I love how the supernatural and fantasy work so well as a metaphor for real life struggles and that makes Buffy, super hero, so easy to relate to.

06. Leverage

Moreau: I have the guns, I have the media, I have the government.
Nate: Know what I have? I have a 24 year old genius with a smart phone and a problem with authority.

This show is like the ultimate happy. The characters are amazing and fun and so well developed considering it's essentially a procedural. This team is like a perfect family (even if I kind of hate Nate a lot of the time). Every single relationship is just perfect and it doesn't even matter who is interacting cause there's something for everyone. Also, this show has Parker.

05. Gilmore Girls

Rory: You look happy.
Lorelai: Yeah.
Rory: Did you do something slutty?
Lorelai: I’m not that happy.

I see you number one OTP of all of forever and ever. Gilmore Girls was my first internet fandom. It was the first thing I seriously wrote and read fan fiction for. (I did have a notebook of handwritten Sweet Valley fic, but shoosh, no one needs to know I'm that awesome.) I don't think I'd even really understand what shipping is if it weren't for Rory and Logan. Plus, the show is witty and fun and it has so much heart.

04. Firefly

Mal: Well, look at this! Appears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
Zoe: Big damn heroes, sir!
Mal: Ain’t we just?

If I had to choose just one show in the history of shows to have gotten more seasons, I would choose this one. It just wasn't enough of these characters or this universe. I'm so glad we got the (fantastic) movie, but a;slkjdsl I just want more. Everyone has such a complex back story, and we really barely scratched the surface. I could watch this show over and over again and never get bored of any of it. I love the episodes that play with flashbacks, and I love that they all (but especially Mal) are total anti-heroes. IDK, I love it all, and I could ramble for days Oh, show, it just wasn't enough. Also, this cast? Too much cute. How do they even exist?

03. Sports Night

Isaac: A couple of things. I am not quitting and I am not getting fired, not today and probably not tomorrow. Let me add, Dana, that things I say in my office stay in my office.
Dana: Natalie’s my second in command. She’s the only one I told.
Natalie: Jeremy’s my boyfriend. He’s the only one I told.
Jeremy: I told many, many people.

Basically, Aaron Sorkin owns my soul. I decided to watch this show after Studio 60 started airing and long after I was fully obsessed with The West Wing. I don't think there's any other sitcom out there that can make you cry in the second episode like I did with The Apology. Just like Sorkin makes his dramas very funny, his comedy doesn't shy away from heavy topics. I know I'm rambling about the characters in all of these explanations (what can I say, I'm a character person), but omg, the chaaaaracters in this show. Dan Rydell is just perfect, and he has a crush on Hillary Clinton and he thinks Casey should date Yoko Ono. Natalie is strong and capable and both she and Dana manage to work in sports without sacrificing their feminity and without trying to become "one of the guys." Casey is a self-involved goober, but a loveable one. He's really cool, ok, just ask him. Jeremy is ridiculous and adorable, and he fainted because you can't tell him the little deer didn't know which one was its mother. Isaac is pretty much the best boss ever. I LOVE EVERYONE IN THIS BAR.

02. Veronica Mars

Wallace: That might play with the masses, but underneath that angry young woman shell, there’s a slightly less angry young woman who’s just dying to bake me something. You’re a marshmallow, Veronica Mars. A twinkie!

So, I started watching Veronica Mars the summer after S2 aired, and they were reairing it all summer. I started with the first episode of S2. And i was ridiculously confused. But it didn't matter, because Veronica is amazing, and Kristen Bell is perfect, and when I got home from school I bought S1 on DVD and watching it in like two days and got S2 as soon as it was available even though there was only like two more episodes to air on TV. Basically what I'm saying is I was a goner for this show, and I never came back.

01. The West Wing

Bartlet: CJ, on your tombstone it’s gonna read ‘Post hoc ergo propter hoc.’
CJ: Okay, but none of my visitors are going to be able to understand my tombstone.
Bartlet: Twenty-seven lawyers in the room, anybody know ‘post hoc, ergo propter hoc’? Josh?
Josh: Ah, post, after hoc, ergo, therefore… After hoc, therefore something else hoc.
Bartlet: Thank you. Next? Leo.
Leo: ‘After it, therefore because of it’.
Bartlet: ‘After it, therefore because of it’. It means one thing follows the other, therefore it was caused by the other. But it’s not always true. In fact it’s hardly ever true. We did not lose Texas because of the hat joke. Do you know when we lost Texas?
C.J.: When you learned to speak Latin?
Bartlet: Go figure.

And no one was surprised. This show owns me, and there will never be another. I will never love a cast this much, I will never love an ensemble this much. This show is responsible for my life goals. It gives me majorly unrealistic expectations about government. Nothing else will ever compare to the perfection that is this show. And maybe that should be depressing, but I'm pretty ok with it.
